The Disaster Artist, by Greg Sestero, published in 2013, tells the story behind the greatest worst movie ever, The Room, starring Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero. The story talks about the production of the 2003 film, The Room, and tells us how Tommy and Greg started at the bottom of Hollywood, having dreams to become big movie stars, and having them turned down, but with those tragedies comes greatness, and that is what the film The Room did for them.
The story tells us what happened years prior to shooting the film, and shows the story and reasoning why this film was created. It shows us Tommy and Greg’s relationship with them meeting in many acting classes, both having dreams of becoming the next big Hollywood icon, but that all goes downhill for them. Nobody in the industry accepted their auditions, and they had nowhere to go, but Tommy decides to make a movie themselves, which become The Room. Tommy Wiseau not only starred in the movie but also directed, produced, and wrote the script for the film. Tommy played the main character, Johnny, a man about to marry his fiance, but not knowing that she doesn’t love him anymore. She instead likes Johnny’s best friend, Mark, played by Greg Sestero. The film is about a crazy love triangle with these characters and is poorly executed. Also including much more poorly executed acting, effects, and the story itself, but this film is considered the best worst film ever. Reviewed in many film schools, and people to this day still watch it, but why.
The reason is that the overall story behind the film has so much heart in it. You feel for both Tommy and Greg and how they had these big dreams to become rich and famous, but sadly it didn’t work out, but they took matters into their own hands and worked with what they had, and made what is now The Room. With many big Hollywood movies, we never see the story behind why these films are made and we look past that, and even though The Room is really bad, it has the best heart and connection than any other movie has, and that’s why people still watch it to this day and talk about it, and thats why its the greatest worst movie ever.
