Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline, published in 2011, is one of the best-written works of fiction that I have read, and cause of that Steven Spielberg is assembling a movie based of this wonderful novel. The novel takes place in the near future: 2044, where life is an absolute wreck. War ranges everywhere across the world; there are people living in the stacks, RV’s upon RV’s, each stacking upon each other. With all these problems, life just sucks, but there’s one escape out of it: the OASIS. A virtual reality world where anything is a possibility. You live the life that you always wanted.
Our story follows Wade Watts, a social outcast in the real world, but in the OASIS, he lives his life as a Gunter, a group of people out to seek out to find these three keys left by the creator of the OASIS: James Halliday. When all three keys are assembled you access all of Halliday’s fortune, but this comes at a price where not just Wade is after this fortune but everyone else in the OASIS. The race for the treasure is on!
In Ready Player One, the story feels original and something that we’ve never seen before. We’ve seen a world full of magic and sorcerers, and seen a world full of orcs and people at war, but in this story, we see a world where anything from any movie, video game, superhero, show, cartoon, can literally show up and interact with anyone. We never have seen this in any other book, movie, or video games. This book really has one of the most interesting worlds out there.
